Intro
Happy New Year all! Part of my New Year’s resolution is to read more books that I usually wouldn’t go to. To help with this, I have been working on making seasonal Book Bingos to give me more book options. For one of the Bingo spots, I needed to read a bestseller. It just so happens that my grandmother has been recommending me a bestseller for a while, so I figured, why not try it out!
The book she had been suggesting is called The Housemaid by Freida McFadden. It is not a book I would normally go for since it is a thriller, but I used to read thrillers from time to time, so I hopped on Kindle and started reading it. YOU GUYS! I read this book in less than twenty-four hours! I LOVED it! I highly recommend you give it a read, and if you plan on it, I would stop reading this for now and come back when you finish.
The Housemaid follows Millie, who has been looking tirelessly for a job after being released from prison. As you can imagine, finding work as an ex-con has been proving quite difficult for Millie. She had found a job with the help of her parole officer but ended up getting fired. As a result, she was living in her car (which is against the terms of her parole) and is in desperate need of a job.
Just when all hope starts to seem lost, she decides to interview for a job WAY out of her league just to see what would happen. The job in question is a live-in housemaid position for a very wealthy couple, Andrew and Nina Winchester. She put on her best outfit and went for the interview. During the interview, she hit it off with Nina! Millie noticed Nina had let herself go a bit for such an upper-class wealthy woman and assumed caring for the massive mansion she called home was starting to weigh on her. After Millie’s interview, she waited patiently to hear back, and just when she accepted that she hadn’t made the cut, she got a phone call from Nina offering her the job!
What seemed to be a dream come true quickly turned sour. The first day, Nina showed Millie to her room, and Millie was stunned, to say the least. It was a small room in the attic with a tiny window. She soon noticed that the door to her room was only locked from the outside, which added to her nerves. She also meets Nina’s daughter, Cecelia. The girl was very standoffish to Millie and dressed as though she was in the late nineteen hundreds. Although some of these things raised some concerns for Millie, she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make a bunch of money and have an actual room. After some thinking, she decided she would give it a shot.
After working for the Winchesters for a while, Millie starts to realize something isn’t right here. Nina always manages to make the house a total mess, seemingly overnight. She also begins blaming Millie for things she didn’t do. Cecelia also seems to go out of her way to make Millie’s life more difficult. The only bright side to this situation is Andrew. He seems to be the only sane person in this family. He insinuates that Nina might have some mental health issues, which is then confirmed by Nina’s friends. Millie begins to feel bad for Nina and tries her very best to keep the peace.
Everything came to a head when we found out Nina was unable to have any more children. As a nice gesture, Millie offered to schedule Nina and Andrew some one-on-one time at a Broadway show and a nearby hotel. Nina excitedly agrees, but then when the date comes, Nina insists she told Millie she couldn’t do that day and ends up not going. Nina had to take Cecelia to her camp, so Nina would be gone all night.
